Parting with Superman and The Witcher, Henry Cavill Embraces on Amazon's New Universe Warhammer 40K

The end of 2022 marked major changes for two important cinematic roles in Henry Cavill's acting career: Superman in the DC Cinematic Universe and Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher on Netflix.

RELATED:

At first it was the seemingly good news in October 2022 when Henry Cavill was announced by DC Studios that he would be returning to the role of Superman in a new movie, presumably a continuation of the stories of the Man of Steel and Justice League directed by Zack Snyder.

This news seems to urge him to be bolder in parting ways with the character Geralt in the Netflix's The Witcher series after completing the filming of season 3 (scheduled to air in the summer of 2023). Some inside sources said that Henry Cavill disagreed with the writing team when they changed too many originals of the IP. Liam Hemsworth (Chris Hemsworth's younger brother) is reportedly to replace Henry in The Witcher season 4.

Just a few weeks later, things turned around again when DC Studios had a new co-chairman, James Gunn, who reversed the previous decision. James is expected to write and direct a younger version of Superman instead of Henry Cavill's version; similar to what has been done with The Batman once associated with Ben Affleck (replaced by the younger Robert Pattinson).

This irony makes it unlikely that he will even appear as a cameo in any future DC Studios movies. This by no doubts means that Henry Cavill is now and forever parting with the S cape.

In a social media status at the end of 2022, Henry Cavill shared his plans for the Warhammer Cinematic Universe adapted from the Warhammer 40,000 game series.

For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action. Now, after 22 years of experience in this industry, I finally feel that I have the skill set and experience to guide a Warhammer Cinematic Universe into life. Partnering with Natalie Viscuso at Vertigo has been a blessing beyond words, without her we might not have found the perfect home at Amazon. And having a home like Amazon will give us the freedom to be true to the massive scope of Warhammer. To all of you Warhammer fans out there, I promise to respect this IP that we love. I promise to bring you something familiar. And I endeavour to bring you something fantastic that is, as of yet, unseen.

Our first steps are to find our Filmmaker/Creator/Writer. Watch this space, my friends.

The Setting of Game Warhammer 40,000

Warhammer 40,000 is a miniature war game produced by UK-based Games Workshop, being the most popular of its type in the world, and especially popular in the UK. The first edition of the rule book was published in September 1987 and the ninth and current edition was released in July 2020.

Game Warhammer 40,000 is full of violence and pessimism. It depicts a distant future, in the 41st millennium, when human social and scientific progress has ceased, and human civilization is in a state of total war with hostile races, alien enemies and mystical forces. It's a setting where supernatural powers exist, who are powerful, and often unreliable if not outright cruel to humans. In fact, there are no benevolent gods or spirits in the universe, only elves and evil spirits dominate, and cults that worship them are proliferating across the cosmic.

In the long run, the Imperium of Man cannot hope to defeat its enemies, so the purpose of the Imperium heroes is not to fight for a brighter future but to "fight the death of light.", i.e. fighting only in the hope of surviving. The tone of the setting has resulted in a subgenre of science fiction called "grimdark", which is particularly immoral, chaotic, or violent.

The source of magic in the game setting is a parallel universe containing supernatural energy known as the Warp. All living beings with souls are attached to the Warp, but certain individuals known as the Psykers have a particularly strong bond and can manipulate the Warp's energy to perform magic. .

The Psykers are often feared and distrusted by humans. Psykers can possess many dangerous abilities such as mind control, clairvoyance and fire control (pyrokinesis).

Furthermore, the Warp is filled with predatory creatures that can use the Psykers' association with the Warp as a conduit to invade real space, threatening humanity. But despite all the dangers the Psykers pose, human civilization can't do without the Psykers: their telepathic abilities provide communication faster than light and on the battlefield, Psykers are also the best warriors against other Psykers of the enemies.

For this reason, the Imperium round up any Psyker they find and train them to control their abilities and fend off predators from the Warp. Psykers who fail or refuse to be trained will be executed for the Imperium's safety. Psykers who complete their conversion will be forced into lifelong slavery and subject to absolute mental and behavioral control.

Amazon and Warhammer 40,000

Amazon clearly shows its ambition to become a big player in the movie industry and compete with giants in the streaming service industry such as BHO, Netflix... It spent approximately USD 250 million to buy the rights to adapt Tolkien's novel "Lord of the Rings" to develop the "Rings of Power" series, which is expected to have 6 seasons with a total film budget of about 750 million USD. The Rings of Power set a record on its September 2022 premiere on Amazon's Prime Video after being watched by more than 25 million viewers.

Warhammer 40,000 continues that ambition of Amazon. Games Workshop, publisher of Game Warhammer, said Amazon's content unit will develop its intellectual property into film and television productions, starting with the "Warhammer 40,000" Universe under a undisclosed principle agreement. However, the cost Amazon spent to buy the rights to the adaptation is still unknown so far.

In Warhammer 40,000, Henry Cavill will not only act as the male lead, but also as an executive producer; but first they need to find a team of writers to start writing scripts.

There's still a long way to go before Henry Cavill gets to see Warhammer's first cinematic look or at least the name of his character.
