Isildur's missing makes General Elendil think he was dead. Elendil tends to partly blame Galadriel for what had happened to his son; while Míriel believes that what Galadriel had done was right.
Galadriel escorts the wounded Halbrand to Lindon to obtain the Elvish potion for healing.
Elsewhere, Nori's caravan discovers their destination forest has been destroyed by the eruption of Orodruin. The Unknown Stranger tries to heal a dead tree but fails, and he decides to leave with a map of the locations of the stars provided by the Harfoots.
The next day, the entire dead forest are revived, the fruits luxuriant. While the Harfoots rejoice, they encounter a mysterious trio searching for the Unknown Stranger. After a failed attempt by Nori to fool them, the trio burn down the Harfoots' possessions. Nori and a few Harfoots set out to find the Stranger to warn him of impending danger.
Meanwhile, in Khazad-dûm, Elrond proposes a deal to King Durin III: Lindon would provide wealth and prosperity to the Dwarves for centuries; in return they get to mine mithril. However, King Durin III refuses, stating that the Age of Elves in Middle-earth is coming to an end.
As Elrond leaves, Prince Durin IV witnesses a lump of mithril that Elrond left can cure from a sick leaf of the magic tree. He calls Elrond back and begin mining the ore himself.
Just as they dig to a large vein of mithril, King Durin III appears and decides to banish Elrond immediately, deprive Prince Durin IV of his princeship after a hot debate, and seal the mithril mine.
At the bottom of the mine, a giant Balrog has awakened. In Southland, Adar renames the dead land "Mordor".
